John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. Mark 9:38-40
We are in a time of reckoning. We need to deal more generously with ourselves, each other, and the whole creation. We need to believe one another. We need to own our actions and our words and repent when needed.
Jesus says in this passage, “Whoever is not against us is for us.” That is the mindset we need to adopt We are not all enemies; the world is not a zero-sum game.
Power is meaningless unless it is the power of love. Riches are meaningless unless they are the riches of a generous spirit.
This is a terrible and difficult week for many, many people in this country and in our world. Be generous with others. Be generous with yourself. We are all children of God and made in the image of the Holy One.
Be kind and be for each other.
