Thy Kingdom Come, Day 3

Day 3
Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Exodus 20.8-11

Jesus was an observant Jew. I think when we read the Gospels we get the feeling that Jesus didn’t remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Quite the opposite. Jesus reminds us that the Sabbath day was made for us, for our enjoyment, our rest, and the replenishment of life. Take this Sabbath and lay down your work and do something that gives you life and heals your soul, just as Jesus did when he healed on the Sabbath.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
